Hadith on Marriage: The Prophet’s Advice to Young Men

📖Sahih Muslim 1400 c
Abdullah (b. Mas’ud) (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said to us: 0 young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes (from casting evil glances) and preserves one from immorality; but he who cannot afford It should observe fast for it is a means of controlling the sexual desire.

  • This hadith from Sahih Muslim is advising young men who are financially capable to get married in order to avoid committing sins related to sexual desires. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged marriage as a means of controlling one’s physical and emotional urges, and as a way to protect oneself from immoral behavior. The hadith suggests that marriage serves as a shield against immoral behavior by directing one’s attention and affection towards a lawful and permissible partner. In this way, marriage is seen as a means of promoting physical and emotional well-being, as well as a way to maintain the moral fabric of society. However, for those who are not financially capable of getting married, the hadith suggests that observing fasts (such as voluntary fasting outside of the obligatory Ramadan fasts) can help to control one’s sexual desires. Fasting is seen as a spiritual practice that can help to develop self-discipline and control, which can then be applied to other aspects of life, including one’s relationships and behavior.
