Hadith on Manners: The Three Components of Good Character

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2005
Abu Wahb narrated that : ‘Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak explained good character, and then he said: “It is a smiling face, doing one’s best in good, and refraining from harm.”

  • This hadith narrates the explanation of good character by Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, as told by Abu Wahb. According to the narration, good character consists of three things: having a smiling face, doing one’s best in doing good, and refraining from causing harm. Although this hadith is not a direct saying of the Prophet Muhammad, it is in line with the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of good character and conduct. The Prophet Muhammad himself was known for his excellent character and manners, and his companions learned from his example to develop their own good character. Some of his notable companions, such as Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, and Aisha, were known for their honesty, humility, compassion, generosity, and fairness, among other virtues. Their good character and conduct continue to serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for Muslims today, reminding them to cultivate good character in their daily lives, which is pleasing to Allah and beneficial for oneself and others.
