Hadith on Greetings: Increasing Greeting with Peace

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2689
Narrated ‘Imran bin Husain: “A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaykum (Peace be upon you).’” [He said:] “So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Ten.’ Then another came and he said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah).’ So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Twenty.’ Then another came and said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah, and His Blessings).’ So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Thirty.’”

From this hadith, we can learn the following:

  1. The importance of greeting others with peace: The Islamic greeting “As-Salamu ‘Alaykum” is highly encouraged and carries blessings. It is a way of spreading peace and goodwill among people.
  2. The significance of adding more supplications: Adding phrases such as “Wa Rahmatullah” (and the mercy of Allah) and “Wa Barakatuh” (and His blessings) to the greeting increases the reward or blessings received.
  3. The concept of varying rewards: The hadith illustrates that the reward for a specific action can vary based on the manner in which it is performed. By increasing the supplications and invoking Allah’s mercy and blessings, one can earn greater rewards.

Overall, this hadith highlights the value of greeting others with peace, encourages the inclusion of supplications in greetings, and teaches that sincere acts of worship can earn varying levels of rewards.
