📖Sahih Muslim 1466
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A woman may be married for four reasons: for her property, her status. her beauty and her religion, so try to get one who is religious, may your hand be besmeared with dust.
- This hadith from Sahih Muslim 1466 narrates a saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding the reasons why a man may choose to marry a woman. He mentioned that a woman may be married for four reasons: her property, her social status, her physical beauty, and her religious commitment. However, he advised that the most important criterion for a man seeking a spouse should be her religious commitment. This hadith teaches us that while worldly considerations such as property, status, and beauty may be valid reasons for considering a potential spouse, they should not be the only or even the primary factors in making a decision. Instead, a person’s religious commitment should be given priority, as this is likely to have the most positive impact on the marriage and family life in the long run. As for men, the same criteria apply to them when seeking a spouse. They should seek a partner who is religiously committed, as this is likely to result in a happier and more successful marriage. In Islamic tradition, men and women are considered equal in their religious responsibilities and obligations, including the duty to seek a spouse who will help them fulfill their religious obligations and lead a righteous life.
