Hadith on Parents: Neglecting Parents in Their Old Age

📖Sahih Muslim 2551 a
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: Let him be humbled into dust; let him be humbled into dust. It was said: Allah’s Messenger, who is he? He said: He who sees either of his parents during their old age or he sees both of them, but he does not enter Paradise.

  • This hadith from Sahih Muslim narrates a saying of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) where he repeated twice the phrase “Let him be humbled into dust” and then explained that it refers to a person who witnesses one or both of his parents in their old age and yet does not serve them or take care of their needs. The Prophet (ﷺ) then mentioned that such a person will not enter Paradise. This statement highlights the significance of honoring and serving parents, particularly during their old age when they may require more care and assistance. Islam emphasizes that treating one’s parents with kindness, respect, and love is a fundamental duty for every individual. Therefore, this hadith emphasizes the importance of fulfilling the rights of parents and treating them with kindness and respect. Neglecting one’s parents during their old age and failing to serve them is a grave sin that can lead to severe consequences, including the denial of Paradise.
