Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2058
Abu Sa’eed narrated: “The Messenger of Allah(S.A.W) would seek refuge from the jinn and the (evil) eye of humans, until Al-Mu’awwidhatain were revealed. So when they were revealed he used them and left other than them.”
- This hadith from Jami` at-Tirmidhi states that Abu Sa’eed narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge from the jinn (spirits) and the evil eye caused by humans. However, when the last two chapters of the Qur’an known as Al-Mu’awwidhatain (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) were revealed, he started using them as his means of seeking protection and stopped using any other supplications or practices. The meaning of this hadith is that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recognized the existence of supernatural beings like jinn and the harm caused by the evil eye. He would seek refuge from their potential harm, but after the specific chapters of the Qur’an mentioned above were revealed, he relied on them as a comprehensive means of seeking protection from these entities. These chapters contain supplications seeking refuge in Allah from various types of evil and are considered powerful in warding off harm. The hadith indicates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) acknowledged the effectiveness of these specific chapters and preferred them over other supplications or practices previously used for protection.
