Hadith on Salat: Fulfilling Forgotten Prayers

đź“–Sahih al-Bukhari 597
Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If anyone forgets a prayer he should pray that prayer when he remembers it. There is no expiation except to pray the same.” Then he recited: “Establish prayer for My (i.e. Allah’s) remembrance.” (20.14).

From this hadith (narration), we can learn the following:

  1. Importance of Prayer: The hadith emphasizes the significance of prayers in Islam. It highlights that praying regularly and remembering Allah through prayer is essential.
  2. Obligation to Perform Missed Prayers: If someone forgets to perform a prayer at its designated time, they are required to make it up as soon as they remember. This indicates the obligation to fulfill missed prayers and not intentionally neglect them.
  3. No Expiation Other Than Prayer: The hadith states that there is no other way to make up for a missed prayer except by performing the same prayer. This emphasizes that prayer itself serves as an expiation for the negligence of a previous prayer.
  4. Qur’anic Verse as Evidence: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) supports his statement by reciting a verse from the Quran (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:14), which says, “Establish prayer for My (i.e. Allah’s) remembrance.” By quoting this verse, the Prophet emphasizes the importance of prayer as a means of remembering Allah.
