📖Sunan Ibn Majah 4102
It was narrated that Sahl bin Sa’d As-Sa’idi said: “A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, show me a deed which, if I do it, Allah will love me and people will love me. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Be indifferent towards this world, and Allah will love you. Be indifferent to what is in people’s hands, and they will love you.”
From this hadith, we can learn the following lessons:
- Seeking the love of Allah: The man who approached the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was eager to find a deed that would earn him Allah’s love. This indicates the importance of seeking Allah’s pleasure and love in our actions and striving to attain His favor.
- Detachment from worldly possessions: The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised the man to be indifferent to this world. This implies that one should not excessively chase after worldly possessions or be overly attached to material wealth. Instead, focusing on the spiritual and moral aspects of life should take precedence over worldly desires.
- Allah’s love through detachment: By being indifferent to this world and its attractions, one can gain the love of Allah. This highlights the significance of cultivating a mindset of detachment from worldly possessions and focusing on one’s relationship with Allah. When we prioritize our connection with Allah over material pursuits, we can earn His love and favor.
- Gaining people’s love: The Prophet (peace be upon him) also advised the man to be indifferent to what is in people’s hands. This means not being covetous or envious of what others possess and being content with one’s own blessings. By adopting this attitude, one can earn the love and respect of others. People are naturally drawn to individuals who are not driven by materialistic desires and who display contentment.
In summary, this hadith teaches us the importance of seeking Allah’s love, detaching ourselves from worldly possessions, and being content with what we have. By prioritizing our relationship with Allah and displaying indifference towards worldly matters, we can earn His love and the love of others.
