Why do Earthquakes occur – Valmiki Ramayana
In the Valmiki Ramayana, earthquakes are described as occurring when the Earth is shaken by the movements or actions of certain deities or supernatural beings. For example, in one passage, an earthquake is described as occurring when the god Shiva dances. In another passage, an earthquake is said to occur when the demon king Ravana tries to lift the mountain where the monkey-god Hanuman is hiding also in Valmiki Ramayana it is described that there is a hidden Great-Elephant. When this elephant shakes its head, an earthquake occurs.

📖Valmiki Ramayana 1.40.15
On certain occasions, oh, Rama of Kakutstha, when that great-elephant moves its head desiring respite in tiresomeness then earthquakes will occur on earth.
- This one verse described how the earthquake occur, this is the belief of sanatani that there is a hidden Great-Elephant. When this elephant shakes its head, an earthquake occurs.
