Hadith on Deen: Balance and Moderation in Practicing Islam

đź“–Sahih al-Bukhari 39
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.” (See Fath-ul-Bari, Page 102, Vol 1).

  • This hadith highlights the ease and simplicity of the Islamic way of life, and the importance of balance in practicing one’s faith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warns against extremism and overburdening oneself with religious practices to the point of being unable to continue. Instead, he advises striving for perfection while maintaining a moderate approach. The term “religion” used in this hadith refers to the Islamic way of life, which encompasses all aspects of a Muslim’s life, including personal and social conduct, worship, and spirituality. The Arabic word for this way of life is “deen,” which comes from the root word meaning “to submit” or “to surrender.” It emphasizes the idea that Islam is not just a set of rituals or beliefs, but a complete way of life that requires submission to Allah’s will.

Overall, this hadith emphasizes the importance of balance and moderation in one’s religious practice, and the idea that Islam is a way of life that is meant to be easy and practical for all believers to follow.
