Hadith on Fatwa: Responsibility of Providing Accurate Guidance

📖Sunan Abi Dawud 3657
Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone is given a legal decision ignorantly, the sin rests on the one who gave it. Sulayman al-Mahri added in his version: If anyone advises his brother, knowing that guidance lies in another direction, he has deceived him. These are the wordings of Sulayman.

  • This hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah, highlights the importance of knowledge and guidance in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized that if someone is given a legal decision without proper knowledge, the responsibility and sin rests on the person who gave the decision. This emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and expertise before providing advice or guidance. Additionally, Sulayman al-Mahri’s version of the hadith adds another important aspect, that if someone advises their brother knowing that the correct guidance lies in a different direction, they have deceived their brother. This emphasizes the importance of giving sincere and accurate advice to others, based on proper knowledge and understanding. From this hadith, Muslims can learn the importance of seeking knowledge and expertise before giving advice or guidance to others. It also emphasizes the importance of giving sincere and accurate advice based on proper knowledge and understanding, as deceiving others through misguided advice is a serious sin in Islam.
