Hadith on Gender: Prohibition of Gender Imitation in Islam

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 6834
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) cursed the effeminate men and those women who assume the similitude (manners) of men. He also said, “Turn them out of your houses.” He turned such-and-such person out, and `Umar also turned out such-and-such person.
  • The meaning of the hadith is that it emphasizes the importance of maintaining natural distinctions between men and women in their behavior and mannerisms. The hadith highlights that it is a sin in Islam to imitate the opposite gender deliberately, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed his followers to expel such individuals from their homes. This hadith does not imply any hatred or discrimination towards individuals who may identify as transgender or gender nonconforming, but rather, it highlights the importance of adhering to the natural order of creation as ordained by Allah.
