It was narrated that Abu Umamah said: “Our Prophet(ﷺ) commanded us to spread (the greeting of) peace.”
- This hadith From Sunan Ibn Majah 3693, states that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) commanded his companions to spread the greeting of peace (i.e., saying “As-salamu alaykum” or “peace be upon you”). While this Hadith is not a direct quote from the Prophet, it is in line with the Quranic verse that encourages Muslims to greet each other with peace (Quran 4:86) and other Hadiths in which the Prophet instructed his companions to spread peace and kindness. Therefore, the meaning of this Hadith is that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of spreading peace and harmony among people. This is not only limited to Muslims but also includes all human beings. The greeting of peace is a simple yet powerful way of expressing goodwill and building positive relationships. Hence, it is incumbent upon Muslims to make a habit of greeting others with peace and spreading peace wherever they go.
