Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The keys of the unseen are five and none knows them but Allah: (1) None knows (the sex) what is in the womb, but Allah: (2) None knows what will happen tomorrow, but Allah; (3) None knows when it will rain, but Allah; (4) None knows where he will die, but Allah (knows that); (5) and none knows when the Hour will be established, but Allah.”
This hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari 7379, highlights five things that only Allah knows and that no one else has knowledge of. These things are referred to as “the keys of the unseen” and they are:
- The sex of the child in the womb.
- What will happen in the future (tomorrow).
- When and where it will rain.
- Where a person will die.
- When the Day of Judgment will occur.
The statement “None knows (the sex) what is in the womb, but Allah” in this hadith emphasizes the idea that even before the formation of a child in the mother’s womb, Allah has complete knowledge and wisdom about it, including its gender. This highlights the importance of relying on Allah for knowledge and guidance, and it does not conflict with the Islamic belief in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. Islam encourages scientific exploration and discovery, but it also emphasizes the ultimate power and knowledge of Allah.
