Hadith on Dua: Guidance, Forgiveness, and Blessings

📖Sunan an-Nasa’i 1745
It was narrated that Abu Al-Jawza said:
“Al-Hasan said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me some words to say in witr in Qunut: Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta wa ‘afini fiman afayta wa tawallani fiman tawallayta wa barik li fima a’tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alayk, wa innahu la yadhilluman walayta, tabarakta Rabbana wa at’alayt (O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship, and bless me in what You have bestowed, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can influence You; and he is not humiliated whom You have befriended. Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.)’”

This hadith from Sunan an-Nasa’i 1745 narrates the supplication (dua) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught to Al-Hasan for recitation in the witr prayer. The words of this dua are:

  • “O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship, and bless me in what You have bestowed, and save me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can influence You; and he is not humiliated whom You have befriended. Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.” This dua is recited during the witr prayer, which is an optional prayer that can be performed after the obligatory Isha prayer. It is recommended to recite this dua in the Qunut (standing) position during the last rak’ah of the witr prayer.

Muslims can learn several important lessons from this dua:

  1. Seeking guidance from Allah: The dua begins with a request for guidance from Allah. This highlights the importance of seeking guidance from Allah in all aspects of life.
  2. Seeking forgiveness: The dua also includes a request for forgiveness from Allah. This reminds Muslims of the importance of seeking forgiveness for their sins and mistakes.
  3. Seeking Allah’s friendship: The dua includes a request for Allah’s friendship and favor. This emphasizes the importance of developing a close relationship with Allah and seeking His blessings.
  4. Trusting in Allah’s decree: The dua acknowledges that Allah decrees all things and that none can influence His decree. This reminds Muslims to trust in Allah’s plan and to accept whatever He decrees for them.

Overall, this dua teaches Muslims the importance of seeking guidance, forgiveness, and Allah’s blessings, and trusting in His decree.
