Hadith on Faith: Major Sins and Their Impact on Faith in Islam

📖Sahih al-Bukhari 2475
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When an adulterer commits illegal sexual intercourse, then he is not a believer at the time, he is doing it, and when a drinker of an alcoholic liquor drinks it, then he is not a believer at the time of drinking it, and when a thief steals, then he is not a believer at the time of stealing, and when a robber robs, and the people look at him, then he is not a believer at the time of doing robbery.

  • This hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari 2475 states that when a person commits a sin such as adultery, drinking alcohol, stealing, or robbery, they are not considered to be a believer at the time of committing the act. This means that their actions are in direct contradiction to the teachings of Islam and are considered to be sinful. If the sin involves harming or wronging another person, then in addition to seeking forgiveness from Allah, the person should also seek forgiveness from the person they wronged. If the person forgives them, then that is a positive step towards reconciliation and repairing the relationship. However, if the person does not forgive them, then it is up to the Islamic law to decide the appropriate punishment for the sin committed. The person who has committed the sin should also make a sincere effort to avoid committing the same sin in the future. If they do so and repent, seeking forgiveness from Allah, then their repentance can be accepted by Allah. Allah is known to be the Most Merciful and Forgiving, and He accepts the repentance of His servants who turn to Him in sincere repentance. Therefore, this hadith serves as a reminder to believers that they should avoid committing sins and strive to follow the teachings of Islam at all times. It also highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness for sins committed, both from Allah and from those who were wronged, as well as making a genuine effort to avoid committing the same sin in the future.
