Hadith on Fasting: Break Fast with Dates and Water

📖Jami` at-Tirmidhi 695
Salman bin Amir Ad-Dabbi narrated that : the Prophet said: “When one of you breaks his fast, then let him do so with dried dates. And whoever does not find dates, then water, for it is purifying.”

This hadith from Jami` at-Tirmidhi 695 conveys the advice of Prophet Muhammad regarding breaking the fast during Ramadan. The Prophet recommended starting the iftar (the meal to break the fast) with dried dates, and if dates are not available, then water should be consumed instead, as it has purifying properties.

From a medical perspective, both dates and water offer certain benefits:

  1. Dates: Dried dates are a nutrient-dense food that provide several health advantages. They are a good source of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and helps prevent constipation. Dates also contain natural sugars like fructose and glucose, making them a quick source of energy after a long day of fasting. They are rich in essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and selenium. Dates also contain antioxidants, including flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which have potential health-promoting effects.
  2. Water: Water is essential for maintaining proper hydration, especially during fasting when the body may experience dehydration. Drinking an adequate amount of water helps replenish fluids lost during the fasting period and supports various bodily functions. Water plays a crucial role in digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, joint lubrication, and nutrient transportation. It helps flush out toxins from the body, aids in metabolism, and promotes overall well-being.

In summary, the hadith highlights the spiritual significance of breaking the fast with dates or water. From a medical perspective, dates provide nourishment, energy, fiber, and minerals, while water helps with hydration, digestion, detoxification, and overall bodily functions
