Hadith on Good Character and Righteousness

📖Sahih Muslim 2553 a
Nawwas b. Sam’an al-Ansari reported: I asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) about virtue and vice. He said: Virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your heart and that you disapprove that people should come to know of it.

  • The meaning of this hadith is that virtue is reflected in one’s good character and kind disposition, while vice or wrongdoing is characterized by negative thoughts and feelings that linger in one’s heart. The hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining a virtuous heart, where one disapproves of engaging in evil or immoral actions, even in private, and strives to conceal such behavior from others. It encourages Muslims to cultivate positive qualities within themselves and to avoid negative thoughts and intentions.
