Prophetic Guidance on Truth: Shun Gossip, Scandal, and Fake News

📖Sahih Muslim 2606
‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud reported that Muhammad (ﷺ) said: Should I inform you that slandering, that is in fact a tale-carrying which creates dissension amongst people, (and) he (further) said: The person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie tells a lie until lie is recorded as a liar.

  • The hadith is a statement attributed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and it highlights the importance of avoiding slander, tale-carrying, and spreading false information that can create discord among people. The hadith emphasizes the significance of truthfulness and the consequences of lying. It conveys that a person who consistently speaks the truth is known and recognized as truthful, while a habitual liar will be known and recognized as a liar. The hadith serves as a reminder to refrain from engaging in gossip, spreading scandalous information, and propagating fake news, as these actions can harm individuals and communities, and can lead to division and conflict. It encourages Muslims to uphold the virtue of truthfulness in their speech and interactions with others.
